Installing a Drip Lawn Irrigation System Yourself

!±8± Installing a Drip Lawn Irrigation System Yourself

Most people look at the task of building a lawn irrigation system with dread. The dread that they feel can often lead them to calling in the professionals for a job they could well do themselves. Installing a lawn irrigation system is quite a bit of serious work; but it's straightforward enough that anyone handy about the house could complete the job themselves and pat themselves on the back for a job well done. Let us look at how it is done with a drip lawn irrigation system.

A drip irrigation system is great in an area where drought conditions exist, where the local authorities don't allow regular watering. With a timer regulating the way drip irrigation occurs, you can easily make a little water go very far. Let's look at how you would install a drip irrigation system above ground.

It's easy to set up a makeshift above ground drip irrigation system with nothing more than flexible garden hose and a few pressure regulators. It shouldn't take more than a couple of hours to cut a few holes in a length of garden pipe, and connect it to a pressure regulator. It's easy to buy ready-made rigid piping with holes cut at at equal distances too. That could actually make for a better design.

With an underground irrigation system, you certainly do have a lot more work going in, but you're rewarded with more aesthetically pleasing results. There's nothing above ground to see except a beautiful green lawn. There is a certain amount of additional efficiency to using an underground drip irrigation system. When you place piping within the ground, you bring water directly to the roots of the plants, and there is no water at all lost to evaporation. It makes for the best kind of use of your water. No one will oversee you watering your lawn, they'll just to see how beautiful the results are. You do have to put in a little extra work in the beginning to bury all the pipes though.

So why would anyone ever choose anything but underground? To begin with, some people just like to change the layout of their garden all the time. They like to keep putting in new plants and taking out the old. With an underground system in place, you do lose a little bit of this kind of flexibility. Still, in an age where the watering of our lawns is closely supervised by the authorities, an underground system might let you do more with less.

Watering Roses - Tips For Successful Blooms

!±8± Watering Roses - Tips For Successful Blooms

It's not always easy to attain beauty and accomplish perfection, but by following basic guidelines you can ensure a beautiful show of roses. One of the basic tips is to learn how and when to water your roses and keep in mind there are good times and bad times. So to encourage your roses and reward yourself with the best display ever, all year round, just follow these simple steps:

Morning Dew

We all know how wonderful it is first thing in the morning, when the fresh due has settled and everything is coming alive before the sun becomes too warm. This is the best time to water your roses, so they are fresh and prepared for the heat of the day. If you leave it until later, the sun will evaporate most of the water, leaving little chance for it to reach the roots. If you water in the evening the coolness will keep your plant damp, the leaves will stay wet which can cause mildew. However, not all of us are awake with the lark and able begin our watering regime that early. If you can't water early, do it as soon as you can. If it's early evening, try not to get the leaves too wet, just concentrate on the roots of the roses. The leaves will take care of themselves by taking in natural moisture from the evening air, keeping them free from mildew, insects, pets and fungal diseases, which can all damage roses.

Hazy Heat

Roses are well known for being thirsty and it's only a dedicated gardener who can keep up with the constant routine, but gardeners will be the first to tell you, that all the hard work and perseverance really does pay off. Roses on the whole require between 1 and 2 inches of water each week, one simple way of measuring rainfall is to invest in a rainwater gauge. You can then add the extra amount of water as needed to make up the 1 to 2 inches. The type of climate and soil that you have will determine the amount of water your roses consume. This is where your previous hard work pays off, by watering your plants well in spring you will have made your plants hardy and held them in good stead for the hot dry days of summer. You do need to be aware of the warning signs that not all is well and to keep these in mind when observing your roses. If the leaves are beginning to wilt then they probably just need their thirst quenching. If they are turning yellow and starting to drop off then that's a sign you are over watering and the plant is unable to breathe the oxygen because of water saturation.

It is also important you check for adequate drainage or ground that is not level, roses like a lot of water, but they don't like standing in puddles, so be mindful not to get carried away with the water hose.

Start at the bottom

The golden rule to remember is to always start watering at base of the plant where most of the energy and development takes place. The roots need to be healthy and strong to help the roses grow. The plants will take moisture from the air and draw from the roots. One way to ensure a constant water supply is to set up a drip feed or hose to irrigate the soil. Rose plants could receive approximately 1 to 2 gallons of water per foot per hour, according to the type of hose and pressure of your water supply. You could set up a timer to turn the water on and off at intervals during the day, very useful when you haven't the time to water or have to be somewhere else.

No Pests Allowed

To prevent pests from destroying your roses it's a good idea to spray every two or three days with just a fine mist of water, check your hose for a fine setting. A good quick wash will keep insects at bay but not enough to encourage mildew. Take care to flush the inside of the foliage where pests can collect. If you can do this early in the day it will give the leaves time to dry before the sun goes down and the temperature cools.

How To Choose The Best Coffee Maker

!±8± How To Choose The Best Coffee Maker

If you are a passionate lover of coffee, then you could very well be looking for the right coffee maker to have. Whether the machine is for your office or your very own house, getting the right one is an absolute imperative. But just what makes a coffee maker the right one for you? There are a lot of factors to consider here in getting the answer to that question. In fact, you just might have to ask some questions to get that answer. You need to ask yourself, just how fast do you want the preparation time of your coffee to be? Is it all right with you if your water and your coffee are heated simultaneously? Or would you want these processes to be done separately? What about timer features? Would you want a fresh pot of coffee brewed by the time you wake up? There is also the issue of space. Just how much space is available on your kitchen counter or cupboard? These are just some of the questions you need to ask yourself. The bottom line is, the best coffee maker is the one that can attend to all of your needs efficiently.

A popular favorite is the percolator. This is actually one of the older coffee makers in the market. When you want to brew mild coffee, then the percolator is something you should consider. The two types of percolators include the stovetop percolator and the electric percolator. The electric version can be left on its own because it is simply run by electricity. The stovetop version, on the other hand, needs to be monitored more closely.

Another type of coffee maker is the automatic drip. This is also one of the popular choices in the market. The automatic feature of this type of coffee maker is manifested in the fact that you can actually leave your coffee while it is being brewed. All you have to do is just start the machine and let it process your coffee for you. You can even go about your morning rituals without worrying about your water boiling over and such! It is actually the timer feature that comes with the automatic drip that allows you to go about your daily morning habits without any worries.

Finding the best coffee maker is indeed very important for any avid coffee drinker. Imagine having to jump from one type of coffee maker to another just because you have yet to find the perfect one! This can be quite frustrating. Keep these tips in mind to make the process more manageable.

Organic Gardening - Growing a Vegetable Garden With Limited Sunlight

!±8± Organic Gardening - Growing a Vegetable Garden With Limited Sunlight

Growing vegetables in the shade is not impossible. Planning and picking the right locations for your crops can provide you with a vegetable garden that will do just fine in the shade. Take advantage of the few sunny areas you have, choose the crops you grow carefully and you can even modify the shade areas to fit your gardening needs. With a little careful planning you will be surprised what you can grow in a partial shade area.

There is no doubt that full sun areas are by far the best choice for growing a vegetable garden. Plants need the sun for photosynthesis and to produce sugar.

To deal with shaded areas that you have to work with, you will first need to study the area, figure out how much sun and when those areas get sun, if any. Next figure out exactly what type of area it is, a partially sun or shade location is an area that receives two to six hours of sun, it can be either in the morning or in the afternoon. It can also refer to a full day of on and off sunlight. Most vegetables that prefer a full sun will grow in a partial shade area, especially if they receive the hours of full sunlight they need in the morning.

A garden that is considered lightly shaded is one that receives an intermediate amount of shade. It can be one that receives only an hour or two of direct sun during the day, but bright enough for the rest of the day to allow for a variety of crops like leafy green plants such as lettuce, spinach or broccoli to perform well in.

Full shade is an area that is usually found under mature trees that have dense foliage. Trees like large oaks and maples can cast this type of shade in the summer months. An Area that is heavily shaded under mature evergreens is often an area that is usually dry. A fully shaded area is a good location for woodland type plants and not a great place for vegetables.

A shaded area does have it's benefits. Gardening in the shade can conserve water and weeds don't grow as quickly. Anyone who lives in an area with a lot of trees knows a shady garden can be a pleasant place to spend time working in on a hot summer day. Whatever the type of shade area you have in your yard, you can make the most of it.

If you have a choice, choose an area that has morning sun. Shade in the afternoon will be better for your crops during the hot summer months, this is when the sun is it's most fierce. Severe temperature changes of shade in the morning and the hot blazing sun in the afternoon are difficult for most plants to handle. A gardens that faces east can benefit from the brightness of the sun in the morning and the shade in the afternoon. If your garden is in a location that is under deciduous trees, you can give your plants a head start by starting the seeds indoors or sow them directly into the garden early in the season before the trees form there leaves. The one thing about planting under trees is that the root system of the tree will compete with your garden plants for water and nutrients. Plants that are grown where there are trees will need extra care to make sure they receive the proper amount of water and nutrients to make up for there competition.

If anyway possible get your garden out past the trees drip line, this is where most of the trees root system will end. If that isn't possible, you may be better off to plant in containers under the trees to prevent your crop from having to compete with them.

Some of the vegetables that will tolerate shade, but should be planted in areas that will receive the most sun include beans, peas, potatoes, pumpkin, summer squash and early tomatoes. Crops like corn and peppers tend to not grow so well and produce modestly in partial shade.

Crops that are grown for there root crops and leaves will tolerate more shade than fruit producing crops. Beets, broccoli, carrots, celery, lettuce, radishes, spinach, and turnips can be quite happy in partially shaded areas, along with shallots, onions, garlic, chives, leeks and parsley. Plants that produce leaves can tolerate a partial to light shaded area because there leaves have a larger area to absorb the sunlight they need. Shaded areas can have there benefits with leaf crops. They can be more tender and succulent, without having the bitter taste that they tend to get when temperatures get too hot.

The one thing that you need to avoid when planting in a shade garden is crowding. Plants in the shade will spread out wider that when grown in full sun. Plant your crops wherever they will receive the most sunlight, even if you have to separate your crops in more than one location. Having smaller yields to harvest is better than not having any at all.

Israel's "Drip" Irrigation Technology - Reclaiming World's Deserts - 110 Nations Shown How!

!±8± Israel's "Drip" Irrigation Technology - Reclaiming World's Deserts - 110 Nations Shown How!

It is called "de-desert-ification" by environmentalists, and Israel leads the world in countering the creeping desert-ification that has made large swaths of Africa and Asia uninhabitable. Satellite photographs show that only two countries in the world have increased the area of land covered by forest and agriculture - the United States and Israel. It was Israeli farmers who revolutionized the watering of agricultural crops through the drip-irrigation system that they invented more than 40 years ago, since adopted worldwide.

Water is carried directly to the roots of the plant through tiny holes in small tubes that can be easily redeployed when needed elsewhere. The system is set on a timer, which reduces evaporation and eliminates wasteful run-off. Because the water is delivered directly to the roots of the crop, there are added benefits: there is less moisture on the leaves and surrounding soil which suppresses mold and weeds; there is also a reduced need for chemicals and pesticides.

Israeli company Netafim, which markets the technology, says it is now used in more than 110 countries around the world, and has helped create self-sustaining agricultural communities in drought-stricken areas, particularly in Africa. Israel also leads in waste-water recovery, recycling 70 per cent of its waste water - a huge amount, far and away greater than any other country. The water is used for agriculture, waste management and for fish farms in the desert.

Israel also leads the world in developing and exporting green technologies that are beneficial to the planet. With its main water sources controlled by avowed enemies (Syria and Hezbollah in Lebanon), and with its tiny country generally sandy and infertile, Israel has become a world leader in terms of green technology because of its long experience with water scarcity.

Jon Medved, head of the pioneering video ring-tone company Vringo and an investor in Israeli clean technology companies, explains, " We've created these technologies to solve problems that are acute here." Israel is also a pioneer in geo-thermal and solar energy, the world's leading company in geo-thermal power being Ormat, an Israeli company - developing the harnessing of Earth's heat to generate electricity.
